Faith - the complete trust or confidence in someone or something- is a crucial element for serenity, and being self-employed. For me, this includes the faith in abundance- an abundance of clients, an abundance of financial resources, and an abundance of peer/mentor support. A great challenge over the years.
Being taught to see through the lens of scarcity- especially when it came to money- made me skeptical that the 9th step promise “fear of financial insecurity will leave us” would ever come true for me. After completing steps 4-9 several times and running my own business for many years, I now know in my “kishkas” that I am taken care of and always will be. There is abundance and when I least expect it, the phone will ring or an opportunity of some sort will present itself.
So it is, with the venture I have been working on for the past three years- that of expanding my international training and consulting business. It has been quite a ride, let me tell you. The ride has included writing the book I have envisioned for over 20 years and thought I could produce very quickly. I also thought I would be traveling the globe on a regular basis by now, enlightening professionals world-wide. We all know the saying, “we plan and God/ The Universe laughs.”
The truth is, my dream is happening. It’s just, at this moment, not exactly as I had pictured.
About 8 weeks ago I hit a wall and returned to my fundamental prayer “please show me how you want me to be of service.” Well, the next morning at my 12-step home group meeting, I found myself reading aloud, with a wide smile and inside chuckle, “Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.” Never a coincidence. I was faithfully and humbly reminded of how I am of maximum service. Keep it simple, sweetheart.
And, after asking a few colleagues for help, I received this phone call: “Hi Adena, we are looking for a program director at the start-up IOP I am working at. I am wondering if you are interested. I would love to have you here.”
So, faith shows itself again-there’s that phone call and opportunity!
Now the Clinical Program Director for Rincon Recovery Intensive Outpatient Services here in Tucson, I am collaborating with incredibly seasoned professionals to create the adult substance abuse/trauma treatment program I have always wanted. Excitement, gratitude and humility are my companions.
